Notes and explanations
Where marriages were to take place by licence (rather than after the publication of banns), allegations or affidavits supporting the licence applications were made and bonds were entered into. Below are abstracts from surviving allegations/affidavits and bonds from the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, relating to marriages which were licensed to take place at Waters Upton and/or where one or both parties were of that parish (and in a few cases, where the bondsman alone was of Waters Upton). These documents are held by Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Services, have been digitised by Findmypast, and those relating to Waters Upton cover a period of nearly two centuries: 1690 to 1880.
For the first part of this period there are only bonds, most (but not all) with statements written on the reverse containing information which may not have been recorded on the bond proper (including some or all of: the age and marital status of each party to an intended marriage, and occupations of prospective grooms). Typically this was written in church Latin. Later, the bonds are accompanied by handwritten statements signed by the surrogates, to whom applications for marriage licences were made, summarising the information provided by the applicants and usually identifying the places where the licence applications were made. In time, these were replaced by allegations or affidavits which were typically signed by the prospective groom and his bondsman. Later still, allegations/affidavits are available but not bonds. Exact or approximate ages for the parties to the intended marriages tend to be given early on, but later it was almost always the case that ages were recorded (on the printed forms used for allegations / affidavits) as 21 “and upwards”. The information available (and given in my abstracts below) therefore varies over time, and even from one set of documents to another within a given time period.
Usually, the prospective groom made the licence application and was what I call the chief bondsman – the first of the (almost always) two men who entered into the marriage bond. Sometimes however a licence application was made on behalf of the prospective groom, who was recorded as a party to the intended marriage and may or may not have been a bondsman. Note that the second bondsman was sometimes fictitious – watch out for John Doe, and also a made-up man who may have been John’s ‘brother’ (Thomas Doe), and their (imaginary) friend Richard Roe.
Note that marriages did not necessarily take place after the issue of a licence, although in most cases they did. Also, on rare occasions the marriage did not take place at the parish church specified in the documents.
In the abstracts that follow, the surnames of the prospective brides and grooms are in bold, and the surnames of bondsmen are in bold italics. Unless otherwise indicated – by (X) after a name or a note in brackets (no signature or mark made) – the men making the allegations/affidavits (and the bondsmen where bonds survive) signed their names. Places were in Shropshire unless otherwise stated. Personal names and marital statuses written in church Latin are given here in their English form (e.g. William instead of Gulielmum and bachelor / spinster instead of coelebs / solatus). Ages written in Latin are given as written, with my best attempts at translation in square brackets. Occupations written in church Latin are also given as written (as closely as possible – the handwriting is not always easy to read), with translations given in square brackets. The plus symbol (+) after an age represents “and upwards”. Words or numbers that I cannot fully decipher are given in square brackets, with underscores representing unintelligible letters or digits, and followed by a question mark. Additional information / interpretation by myself is given in square brackets.
