“William Son of John & Elisabeth Harpur of Henny Lane” was baptised on 20 August 1787 at Tibberton. By 1815 he was a resident of Waters Upton, and on 28 March that year he wed a native of that parish, Jane Titley, after banns. Jane was one of 12 children born to Joseph and Elizabeth Titley; she was baptised at Waters Upton on 27 February 1789 and received into the church on 31 May that year.

William made his mark in the Waters Upton register when he married, but Jane signed her name. The witnesses were Sarah Titley, likely Jane’s sister, and the clerk, Richard Nicklin. Over the following 19 years this couple had nine children, all born in the parish.

The two youngest sons of William and Jane Harper, Charles and George, were still living with them at Waters Upton when the 1841 census was taken. Ten years later Charles and George had moved on, and William and Jane were enumerated with another of their sons, Joseph. William was recorded as an agricultural labourer on both occasions (as was Joseph in 1851).
