TNA Reference RG101, Piece 5220F.

Wellington Rural District.

Notes: The 1939 National Identity Register was not a census, but as no census was taken in 1941 due to the war, and as the 1931 census was destroyed during that war, it is an excellent census substitute and fills the long gap between the censuses of 1921 (which will be made public in 2022) and 1951. The register recorded almost all of the population, with the exception of those serving with the armed forces. Entries for those persons with birth dates falling within the last 100 years are redacted, except for those who are known to have died.

Names in the register were typically written with surnames first, followed by forenames; I have presented them here with forenames first. The sex of an individual is only shown here if the name is not obviously male or female. Dates of birth are presented here in the standard format dd mmm yyyy, but they were recorded on the register as, for example, 24 June 04 or 12 Aug 69. Personal occupations are transcribed as originally written. Note that due to discolouration caused by sticky tape, which was used to ‘repair’ tears to some of the pages, parts of some entries are difficult to read. Handwriting is also an issue in some places. Words or digits illegible to me are enclosed in [square brackets] with partial transcriptions where possible, and question marks.

Where names or dates of birth were corrected on the register after it was first taken, the corrected versions are given here. Where surnames were changed (i.e. due to marriage in the case of females), the original surname is given, followed by the later surname and the date the register was updated [in square brackets] (where stated and legible).

Name index, in-page navigation and cross-linking with 1911 census to follow.
