of Waters Upton
who died January 14th 1866,
aged 53 years.

The 1851 census shows John Owen, 39, born at Trentham in Staffordshire, as a visitor in the household of William Matthews, publican, in Waters Upton. He was probably the John Owen who was baptised on 22 Nov 1812 at Trentham, son of John and Elizabeth Owen. With John was his wife Ellen Owen, 38, born at Crudgington (in Ercall Magna), and son William Owen, 5, born at “Handford” (Hanford) in Staffordshire. It seems they liked what they saw, as the 1861 census shows the family resident in the New Inn at Waters Upton, where John was innkeeper. John’s will was proved at Shrewsbury on 15 Feb 1866 by his widow, Ellen; the probate record shows that John died at Waters Upton and that his effects were valued at under £300.
