Waters Upton churchyard MIs: Davis
Added October 2023:
Here lieth the Body of
Richard Davis the Son of
[John] and [Martha] [Davis]
of Walters upton who [Ended?]
[This?] [life?] [in?] the [??] year of his
[Age ?]
[??] [September?] 1752
The short life recorded on this, the oldest gravestone at Waters Upton St Michael with a (just about) legible inscription, appears to have been Richard, son of John and Martha Davis, baptised at Waters Upton on 28 July 1751, and buried there on 20 September 1752. I have not been able to establish with any certainty who John and Martha were.
Here lieth the Body
of William Davis late
of [W_________?] who
[Departed?] [this?] [life?]
[remainder of inscription illegible]
Another very old and badly worn Davis gravestone! Not quite as old as the one for the young Richard Davis, but not far off: I believe this ties in with the Waters Upton register entry for the burial of Willm. Davis, yeoman, on 13 April 1764. “Mary, wid. of William Davis, late of this p., yeoman, aged 84” was buried here on 30 November 1776; perhaps her passing is recorded in the illegible part of the inscription.
I have found two possible marriage records for this couple: “William Davis & Mary Price” on 1 May 1738 at Shawbury, and “William Daves & Mary Harris” on 1 October 1738 at Longden on Tern. Without further evidence I would be hesitant to claim either as relating to this couple (I have not found marriage licences for either event).
