John Wylde, along with six brothers and sisters, can be found with his parents John and Mary on the 1861 census living at Crudgington in Ercall Magna. This is where John junior was born in about 1858, and where John senior was working as a boot and shoe maker at the time of the census. Although Crudgington was part of the parish of Ercall Magna, it does not appear that any of the Wylde children were baptised there.
John Wylde married Lucy Strefford (or Strafford) at High Ercall on 27 Oct 1886. Lucy, daughter of Robert Strefford (another shoe maker) and his wife Maria, was born in 1863 at Sleapford (a.k.a. Sleaford or Slafford) near Long Lane, to the south of Crudgington. John and Lucy Wylde appear on the 1891 census living at the Lion Hotel in Waters Upton, where John was innkeeper. With them were four children, twins Frederick and Joseph (aged 3), Lucy Alice (2) and Sarah Ann (7 months).
Following John’s untimely death in 1900, the 1901 census shows widow Lucy Wylde as innkeeper at The Lion, looking after 5 children including 1 year old Albert. Lucy married William Henry Price (born around 1868 at Great Barr in Staffordshire) in 1902, and continued to live at the Lion Hotel until at least 1911 when William was innkeeper there.
