Waters Upton memorial inscriptions: TOMPKIN

ROBERT TOMPKIN,
WHO DIED JUNE 29TH 1911,
AGED 42 YEARS.

Robert Tompkin was a Staffordshire lad, born in 1864 to Samuel Tompkin, a farmer, and his wife Jane, at Whitmore, where the family was enumerated on the census returns of 1871, 1881 and 1891. By 1891 Robert’s mother, a widow, was head of the household at Yew Tree Farm and Robert had added his wife Mary (Margaret Mary Sutton Barlow, married at Silverdale in 1890) to the family. The 1911 census, taken less than two months before Robert’s death, shows Robert (a farm bailiff) and Mary living at Waters Upton with their children Dorothy Tompkin (19) and Maggie Tompkin (16), both of whom had been born at Whitmore.
