THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH [TAKEN] [AWAY]
BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD.

I have yet to determine the origins of Sarah, wife of Thomas Lloyd, with any certainty. This couple wed at Wombridge on 22 April 1848, neither party giving details of their fathers in the marriage register. After that, Sarah appeared with Thomas on three censuses (at Peplow in Hodnet parish in 1851, then at Cold Hatton in Ercall Magna in 1861 and ’71) – and on each one, a different place of birth was given for her. The three villages (or parishes) named were, respectively, Childs Ercall, Eyton, and Wellington. Sarah had no children that I know of, so I cannot find her maiden surname from a birth registration. My present hypothesis is that Sarah was the daughter of William and Martha Tudor, baptised 2 June 1811 at Eyton.

From Sarah, with a possible baptism, to Thomas, for whom I have found no baptism record at all. I believe he was a son of Thomas Lloyd (c1772–1840) and Mary (c1777–1819, maiden surname unknown). He was born in Wellington around 1811, but by 1841 was living at Waters Upton with his married sister Zillah.

Evidently Thomas had returned to Waters Upton by 1880, when Sarah died. He was enumerated there, as a widower and a gardener, on the 1881 census. He gave his age then as 71 – the same age that appears on his gravestone.
