My research suggests that John was baptised as John Rawlins, son of Thomas Rawlins and his wife Mary, in Smethcott, Shropshire on 24 Oct 1826. His marriage to Sarah, who was born around 1834 in Churchstoke, Montgomeryshire, probably took place in the early 1850s and may have been registered at Atcham in the December quarter of 1853, in which case Sarah’s maiden surname was Williams. The couple lived in and around the Churchstoke area to begin with, where John worked as a waggoner and Mary raised the Rawlins children: Mary, Elizabeth, Edward and Samuel. By 1881 however John and Sarah were living in Waters Upton (with son Samuel) and from that time their surname was written as Rawlings. John was working as a farm bailiff in 1881 and 1891, but in 1901 he was employed as as a poultry man on a farm and he and Sarah were living at Crudgington.
