The 1851 census shows John and Mary Ann Martin at the Unicorn Inn at Hempton (now Hampton) in the Shropshire parish of Chelmarsh. John, 35, an innkeeper, was born at Wrockwardine while Mary Ann, 30, was born at Glazeley. The couple had four children: Henry Martin, 6; Ann Martin, 4; William Martin, 2; and James Martin, 1; Henry was born at Bridgnorth while the other children were born in Chelmarsh parish.

The 1861 census shows that Mary Martin, a widow, 39, was living at the Swan Inn in Waters Upton where she was working as a publican and maltster. With her were her children Ann Martin, 14; James Martin, 11; Mary Martin, 9; and John Martin, 4; the first three born at Hempton Loade while John was born at Waters Upton. Over the previous three years Mary Ann had lost not only her husband, but also two young children, Jane at age 4 in 1858 and Elizabeth, aged just 5 months, in 1859.

It would be more than a decade before Mary Ann would wed again; her marriage to William Foulkes (a.k.a. Foulks) was registered in the first quarter of 1873. The couple appear in the 1881 census (their surname written as Fowlks) at the Swan Inn, along with one of Mary’s children (John, who would not live to see another census taken) and two grandchildren. William Foulks, aged 58 and born in Stanton (Stanton upon Hine Heath) was a butcher and publican; most likely he was the William Foulkes baptised on 7 Sep 1825 at Stanton, son of William and Elizabeth. As Mary Ann died with the surname Foulks I have also included her MI under that surname (even though that surname does not actually appear in the inscription). The 1881 census shows John Buttery and his wife Mary (daughter of John and Mary Ann Martin) living at Coolmoor, Stanton Upon Hine Heath, with their daughter Edith Amy Martin. Edith had been born in the parish of Ercall Magna in 1880, evidently before the marriage of her parents, which was registered in the September quarter of that year. John and Mary Buttery had another daughter, Elizabeth Beatrice, who was born in 1882 but died aged 5 in 1888, just two years after the death of Edith. See also Memorial Inscriptions: Buttery.
