The Jenkins family were living at Waters Upton at the time of the 1871 census. John, 27, was an agricultural labourer, born at Worthen. His wife Elizabeth, 40, was born at Llansaintffraid in Montgomeryshire. With them were two children: Richard Jenkins (8, born High Ercall) and Margaret E Jenkins (4, born Waters Upton). Their son John junior had by this time already passed away, in 1869, having been born in 1865.

In 1901 John, a widower following Elizabeth’s death in 1894, was living at Crudgington Green with his son Richard, who had taken after his father and married an older woman. His wife Martha was only four years younger than his father. Both John and Richard were working as general labourers.
